What supports foster carers in Ireland to continue fostering, and what leads them to consider leaving?
This was the question behind Childhood Matters’ new research report, Factors associated with foster carer retention and attrition in Ireland.
Undertaken on behalf of the [Department of Children, Disability and Equality] as part of its Care Experiences Programme, Journeys through the Irish Care System, the research brings together the experiences and perspectives of foster carers and the foster care staff who work alongside them.
Our findings highlight foster carers’ deep commitment to the children in their care. The report also shows that fostering can involve considerable demands and emotional strain, and that carers need consistent, meaningful support to sustain this commitment.
At Childhood Matters, we believe meaningful change must be informed by those who experience services first-hand. This research reflects our commitment to combining rigorous evidence, clinical understanding and lived experience to improve services and outcomes for children, carers and families.
We are deeply grateful to every foster carer and foster care staff member who shared their experiences with us. Their voices must remain central as the report’s recommendations move from research into policy and practice.
